How Window Shades And Blinds Might Diminish Migraines

Window shades and blinds may reduce the occurrence of migraines. A recent study by Missouri State University’s Center for Biomedical and Life Sciences discovered “REM (rapid eye movement) sleep deprivation caused increased expression of the proteins which are known to play an important role in initiating and sustaining chronic pain,” reports The National Sleep Foundation.

The study further reported that lack of sleep creates a biological environment that is conducive to migraines. Getting a good night’s sleep – a minimum of eight hours for adults and often up to ten hours for teenagers and younger children – may help relive symptoms of migraines. Using window shades and blinds can encourage a more restful sleep, as window treatments are known to block the glare of sunlight and insulate against noise and the elements.

Honeycomb or cellular shades provide more insulation against heat, cold and noise than other window treatments. Blackout shades and blinds also help create an atmosphere that fools the body into thinking it is time to sleep no matter what time of day it is. Turning off or removing TVs from bedrooms also helps induce a better night’s sleep.

The effects of sleep deprivation reach past migraines. “Drowsiness or fatigue has been identified as a principle cause in at least 100,000 police-reported traffic crashes each year, killing more than 1,500 Americans and injuring another 71,000, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, 1994). Young drivers age 25 or under are involved in more than one-half of fall-asleep crashes,” reports the National Sleep Foundation.

Sleepiness can cause more than headaches and car crashes. Those that suffer from sleep deprivation have shown lower performance levels in school and at work. Not only that, driving while exhausted or sleep deprived reduces motor skill coordination. Results are about the same as watching a person drive while intoxicated. A good night’s sleep increases functioning abilities and makes people happier. It’s true. Moods improve with a good night’s sleep.

Having a comfortable space to sleep that is quiet and dark will help with a good night’s sleep. If morning light wakes you up, install blackout blinds or room darkening blinds to minimize light. Creating a routine to let your body know it is time to sleep may also help. This can include drinking a cup of warm milk, or reading a few pages of a book.

When the body doesn’t have enough sleep it acts out. The best way to make sure the body is working at its optimum level is to give it the sleep it needs.

Window shades and blinds are a minor expense when it comes to getting the rest your body needs.
